Have you ever watched someone be in the right place at the right time, and do very well because of it? You were standing in the same place, at the same time, but you did not act. Years later, you watched them win.
I am writing this because I have a feeling this could be one of those moments, and I would rather you read it now than think back on it later.
Premier Danielle Smith recently sat down to explain something big that is already under construction right in our region: a 13-billion-dollar Meta AI data center campus in Sturgeon County, the first of what Alberta hopes will be many. I watched her full explanation and want to walk you through what matters most, including a piece of context that makes the whole story make sense: why this is happening in this specific part of the province and not somewhere else.

Why here? The Industrial Heartland advantage
If you have lived in the Edmonton region for a while, you have probably heard the term Refinery Row, or seen the stacks northeast of the city along the highway to Fort Saskatchewan. That area has a name, Alberta's Industrial Heartland, and it is the reason the Meta project, and likely more like it, landed here instead of somewhere else in North America.
The Heartland is a 582 square kilometre stretch of pre-zoned industrial land spanning five municipalities: Fort Saskatchewan, and the Counties of Strathcona, Sturgeon, and Lamont, plus a portion of the City of Edmonton. Investment in the area dates back to the 1950s, but the coordinated version of it began in 1998, when local municipalities, starting with Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont County, Strathcona County, and Sturgeon County, banded together to form the Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association. The idea was simple. Instead of each municipality competing separately for industrial investment, they would plan the land use together and market the region as a single, powerful package. It worked. Today the Heartland is Canada's largest hydrocarbon processing region, home to more than 40 companies and tens of billions of dollars in cumulative capital investment.
Why does that history matter for a data center? Because the same things that made this region Canada's petrochemical and refining capital- abundant, low-cost natural gas, existing pipeline and power infrastructure, pre-zoned industrial land, and decades of regulatory experience handling massive industrial projects- are exactly what an AI data center needs. It is a natural next chapter for a region that has spent 70 years turning raw natural resources into higher-value products. The Meta campus is not a fluke. It is a continuation of the same industrial story that has been building in our backyard for generations, just with a new product: computing power instead of fuel.

What is an AI data center, and why does Alberta want them?
A data center is a warehouse full of powerful computer servers running around the clock. You have been using them for 20 years without thinking about it. Every email you send, every photo you back up, every show you stream lives in one. AI data centers are the next generation of that same idea. Instead of mostly storing information, they are built to process it and solve complex problems, and because they do far more work, they need far more power.
That is exactly why the world wants to build them here. Alberta produces roughly 60 percent of Canada's natural gas. Think of an AI data center as a digital refinery, shown above: gas becomes electricity, electricity becomes computing power, and computing power becomes intelligence, the answers, predictions, and tools the world is lining up to buy. The finished product then ships out through fiber optic cable at the speed of light. For decades, Albertans have asked why we do not refine more of our own resources at home. This is one answer.

Thousands of jobs, right in our backyard

The Meta project alone is projected to generate roughly 250 million dollars annually in taxes, levies, royalties, and fees, without raising your taxes.
Your power bill is not paying for this
These are 100 percent private projects. Meta's transmission fees alone are expected to shrink the transmission portion of household power bills by up to 6 percent.
Almost no water used
Sealed liquid cooling loops and Alberta's cold air do the work. Meta's entire Sturgeon County campus is expected to use less water in a year than a typical golf course.
Kept well away from neighbourhoods
Independent regulators, binding environmental conditions, and new province wide siting standards keep large sites off residential and prime agricultural land.

How many permanent jobs will the Sturgeon County data center actually create?
Around 300 permanent, on-site positions once the campus is fully operational. The bigger short-term number is construction: more than 3,000 tradespeople at peak build-out, plus an ongoing wave of spin-off jobs in engineering, logistics, maintenance, and local supply chains that ripple across the wider region.
Will a data center this large increase my household power bill?
No. These are private projects that fund their own power generation and grid connections rather than drawing on the shared system homeowners pay into. Meta's transmission fees alone are expected to lower the transmission portion of household power bills by up to 6 percent, since that cost is spread across more users on the grid.
Do AI data centers use a lot of water, and will that affect the local water supply?
Not the newer ones. Older designs relied on evaporating large volumes of water to cool their servers, but the newest AI data centers use sealed liquid cooling loops instead, similar to a car radiator, and Alberta's cold climate does much of the cooling work for free. Meta's entire Sturgeon County campus is expected to use less water in a year than a typical golf course, and every withdrawal still requires a government license.
