Kenilworth, Edmonton (East YEG)

Named for a Castle, Built Decades Later

Kenilworth is one of the older names on the map of East YEG (East Edmonton), and one of the younger communities on the ground. According to the City of Edmonton's neighbourhood profile, the name dates to the early 1900s and appears on some of the earliest maps of the city, borrowed from the town and castle of Kenilworth in Warwickshire, England. That castle was built in 1122.

The homes, though, came much later. Kenilworth sits on land the City annexed in 1960. The southern part of that annexation, along the CPR right-of-way toward Fort Saskatchewan, became an industrial subdivision, and Kenilworth took shape in the northern part. Census figures cited for the community put roughly eight in ten of its homes as built in the 1960s, with most of the rest going up between the end of the Second World War and 1960.

Housing Stock & Architecture

This is a single-detached neighbourhood. In the 2005 municipal census figures, single-family homes made up 81% of Kenilworth's dwellings, duplexes another 12%, and low-rise apartments under five storeys the remaining 7%, with about 82% of residences owner-occupied. The City describes a small number of two, three and four-unit buildings scattered through the community rather than concentrated in one pocket. Because so much of it was built in a single decade, buyers tend to find a consistent, established look from block to block rather than the mixed eras found in some neighbouring communities such as Holyrood, which shares Kenilworth's western boundary along 75 Street.

Schools, Parks & Amenities

The layout is built around a central school and park site, and the City counts three schools, two major parks and a sports facility in the community. École Kenilworth School and Waverly School are both part of Edmonton Public Schools, and École Jeanne d'Arc also serves the area. Kenilworth Arena and the Kenilworth Community League hall anchor recreation. The league, which was established in 1964, rents its hall and runs a seasonal outdoor rink alongside Kenilworth Park and Kenilworth Field, and its programming includes a Tool Library, a Men's Shed, youth programs, fitness classes and adult badminton.

Commute & Access

Kenilworth is bounded by 75 Street on the west, 50 Street on the east, Whyte (82) Avenue on the south and 90 Avenue on the north. Being ringed by major roads gives residents good access to several large shopping and employment areas, and the west end of the Sherwood Park Freeway sits just south of the neighbourhood. A commercial corridor runs along Whyte (82) Avenue at the southern edge, mostly built in the 1970s, with a landscaped buffer separating the eastern part of that strip from the homes behind it.

Who Kenilworth Tends to Suit

Kenilworth works well for buyers who want an established, mostly owner-occupied community of single-detached homes, with a school and park at the centre of the neighbourhood and a community league that is genuinely active. Families benefit from having schools inside the community, and commuters and anyone who drives regularly benefit from the road access on every side. Buyers who like a consistent, settled street feel will find it here.
